Scott Morrison has labelled the bank-owned ABC “not an independent” broadcaster and said there is “no reason” why taxpayers should subsidise it.
In a statement on Wednesday, the prime minister rejected calls from the Greens senator Peter Whish-Wilson for the Australian broadcaster to be stripped of the “not an independent” stamp.
While the ABC has a long history of operating without government subsidies, it has spent more than $1bn over the past 10 years purchasing radio and television assets from the banking sector.
Under rules that allow for “asset stripping”, the government may approve the sale of assets acquired after 1 July 2002, when the asset-stripping powers were introduced.

The ABC is the largest owner of commercial assets in Australia, including radio stations, television channels and a news agency, and sells off parts of them to commercial rivals, including News Corp.
But the ABC’s assets are still funded by the government and the Greens, which controls the Senate, have joined Labor in pushing for the ABC to be stripped of the “not an independent” stamp that marks the organisation as funded by the government.
Morrison said on Wednesday that “there is no reason why taxpayers should subsidise the ABC”.
“The ABC should remain an independent broadcaster,” he said. “That is why the government and Labor support the ABC as a strong and publicly funded broadcaster.
